Vigil comemorating the 8th anniversary of the assassination of Fredy Villanueva

On August 9, 2008, Fredy Villanueva, 18, was shot dead by the bullets of a crazed gunman wearing the uniform of the Montreal Police.

Once again, this year the Villanueva family and their supporters will gather at the scene of this crime to commemorate the painful circumstances in which the young man, who had a lifetime ahead of him, was shot to death by the police.

Eight years later, justice for Fredy Villanueva’s death still seems remote for his family, as criminal and civil proceedings continue to get bogged down in the quicksand of the Quebec legal system - well known for its legendary procrastination.

In addition to this aberrant police impunity, the Montreal North borough, with a head-in-sand policy, stubbornly refuses to have Fredy Villanueva on the centennial’s mural. As of yet, municipal leaders have not decided to authorize this mural at the place of his killing that has left its mark on both local history, as well as Quebec's history itself.

With this in mind, those sympathetic to the cause of the Villanueva family are invited to join the vigil commemorating this sad anniversary.
